World Water Day 2025: Why Water Matters in the Workplace
By Matthew Chilcott, Owner, Consensus HR
World Water Day, marked each year on 22nd March, highlights the importance of clean water access and sustainable water management. While often seen as an environmental issue, water also plays a vital role in workplace wellbeing, HR policies, and employee rights.
Why Water is a Workplace Priority:
Staying hydrated is essential for employee wellbeing, concentration, and overall health. Dehydration can lead to tiredness, headaches, and reduced productivity, all of which can impact performance and absence levels. Employers have a duty to ensure that clean drinking water is readily available and that teams understand the benefits of staying hydrated.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, businesses must provide sufficient drinking water facilities. Whether in an office, a shop, a factory, or on a construction site, employers must ensure staff have access to clean, fresh water throughout the working day.
HR Policies on Hydration & Sustainability:
A strong HR strategy can help businesses create a healthier and more sustainable workplace. Here’s how employers can promote water awareness at work:
✅ Encourage Hydration Breaks – Support short breaks to allow employees to grab a drink and stay hydrated.
✅ Provide Filtered Water – Cut down on single-use plastics by offering water stations and reusable bottles.
✅ Raise Awareness – Use internal communications, posters, and team meetings to educate staff on the importance of hydration and responsible water usage.
✅ Flexible Working for Sustainability – Remote working can reduce office water consumption, helping businesses to lower their environmental footprint.
Matthew Chilcott, Owner of Consensus HR, Comments:
“At Consensus HR, we firmly believe that a well-supported team is a productive one. Hydration plays a key role in maintaining employee health and performance, and businesses must take responsibility for ensuring their workforce has access to clean drinking water. By embedding sustainable water management into HR policies, companies can support both staff wellbeing and environmental responsibility. On World Water Day, let’s reflect on the value of fresh water and ensure our workplaces promote a hydrated, engaged, and eco-conscious workforce.”
