NEWS ARTICLE: Sunak tries to head off rebels with pledge on EU law repeal
Rishi Sunak has pledged not to use a review of European Union laws to water down protections on workers’ rights and the environment, in an effort to head off a rebellion. MPs will debate the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill when it returns to the Commons today and there is a cross-party amendment that would force ministers to detail which laws it plans to scrap. To placate the rebels, Downing Street said the cabinet had discussed the bill and insisted that it would not remove existing rights and protections. It comes as 60 organisations warned the PM that the “rush” to scrap, retain or reform 4,000 Brussels regulations means there is a risk of crucial protections being undermined. In a letter to Sunak, the organisations – including the Institute of Directors, the National Trust and the Trades Union Congress – said the speed at which the laws needed to be deleted “increases the risk of poor or detrimental law entering the statute book.”
